Earthquake Letter

To our dearest members of Society,

Who have been badly affected by the 7.5 major earthquake, our hearts and sincere sympathies go out to you. I hope you are alright and that you are still well in this moment. It is heartbreaking that 2 people have passed away due to this dreadful situation but hopefully you are still managing to keep strong. To survive this earthquake shows that you are quite tough and will be  able to overcome this. You have the strength and heart as soldiers and can and will get through whatever life gives to you.

I really don’t know what you are going through as there has been 800 aftershocks! That 7.5 quake was even stronger than the Christchurch earthquake in 2011 which means that more of your area is damaged. I pray that you’re safe and sound somewhere with the support and care that you need. Also my prayers go out to the families of the 2 people who have passed.

The pictures of the damage that has been done to your city just makes my heart sink more in sadness. I know that even the basic things such as clothing, food and water is very low but you guys are warriors and i’m pretty sure that help is coming!

Lastly I just really want you guys to know that I truly care about you as if you guys were my family. I will keep hoping and praying the best for you all. I believe that very soon you will all be able to have the normal bright smiles on your faces again.

Your’s Sincerely
Marilyn Slade

States of matter

Discussion Doc  (Make a copy first, file in reading)
States of matter

Task
Work on this Doc together with a partner.

Give three examples of each state of matter?
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Diamond
Water
Air
Concrete
Honey
Oxygen
Sugar
Blood
Carbon Dioxide

What’s the difference between the three states of matter?
Solids
Liquids
Gases
The particles of the solids are compressed together to form a harder surface
The particle of the liquids are not as compressed together as a solid. There particles flow easily and don’t mind being separated.
Gases are similar to liquids. Their particles flow around in their air in separation. They cannot be held like a solid as there particles are not compressed together.

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you learned from this reading.
I have learnt the differences between all three of the states of matter. Also particles can also be called Atoms. When atoms are made smaller they are called Molecules. Also I have learnt the difference between mass and weight. Mass is the quality that gives weight its shape. Weight is the heaviness of the mass.

Tamaki College Recount

On a Tuesday the 20th September  the year 8’s had the opportunity to go down to Tamaki College for a whole day to experience what college was like. We attended classes such as Social Studies, English, Maths and P.E (Physical Education).

We would usually walk down for Technology at Tamaki College on Tuesdays after morning tea but we were walking in the morning so it felt a little weird. I chatted to my Partner Taunese the whole way.

We made our way into there school hall known as the Auditorium. There we were greeted by a lady named Mrs Moore. The day before we had been given a brief summary of who she was. She was a kind and generous lady who organized this day for us. She organized things such as the classes we were in and the morning tea and lunch. We had former ex Pt England students who now attend Tamaki College show us around.  First was Social studies.

I had never before heard of a subject called Social studies so I didn’t know what to expect. Mrs Apelu was our social studies teacher. She introduced us to Social studies. We got to learn about the current issues. We saw pictures of how children got to school. Most were shocking. Some had climbed on cliffs without any safety equipment, some would have to go through rough rivers and more dangerous things... We then were given an assignment to create a pair of shoes that would help these children get to school better or if we were the Prime minister with all the money in the world what would we do to help the children get to school. What I did was I would build closer schools in remote villages.

We then had maths to follow up. We had Mr Sharma. He had visited our school before with Gabriel and Saia. So he was familiar to the Year 8’s. We had play kahoot which was a quiz site. We took a quiz about shapes.  We then went outside and we played Shapeshifter. This game requires the teacher to say a shape and the students have to get into that shape.

Interval had come quickly and we soon then were in the Auditorium for morning tea. We had a water bottle, an apple and many more snacks provided for us.

We then did have other subjects to attend such as English and P.E (Physical Education) .  In English there were ten words on the screen that we had to remember. Then we had to write them down in a document and get pictures of what first came to our head when we read the word. Then there was a poem that we were given to add pictures to. For PE we played games and had a lot of fun.

It was an awesome college experience. I look forward to college in 2017!

My Maths Goals

In Maths I want to accomplish a lot of things.

I want reach the Year 8 strategy level or maybe even higher. The reason being is that I want my strategies to improve and also the people I work with. I want to surround myself with people who will help me reach my goals instead of those who will bring me down. Also I want to improve my maths whizz age.

Maths Problem Solving

This week we are learning to do multiplication in parts to solve problems.
In other words learning to use the partitioning strategy. This is when we get
the big number and we split them into parts. When then take a part at a time and
multiply it by the number given to us. We do this for all the parts. By the end we
will at least have 3 eqautions and 3 answers as we had 3 parts. We then add all the answers
together and then that is our overall answer!
Enjoy!

Converting Fractions

In Maths we have been taking this excersice to help us with our conversions.
The conversions is from percentage to fraction then lastly to decimals. We stay on this excersice for 15 minutes a day and then we do our practice work as we have already got the strategy in our heads. At the end it gives us a score and we have to try and beat it the next day!
ENJOY!

Maths Whizz Learning

In Maths Whizz I have been learning about Decimals converting into Fractions. In my test I have to drag a line to which decimal is the exact as the fraction. This will help me improve my learning in Decimals and fractions. They are also in equilateral decimal forms which makes it quite harder. Hopefully I will get a 5 out of 5 which will earn me 30 maths whizz coins!!

Hiwi the Kiwi

Image result for hiwi the kiwiHiwi the Kiwi is a special group that made a visit to our School. They came to promote their care for the ocean and why it is important to care. They taught us things such as how big is the fish we are allowed to take home with us and different kinds of Birds that are soon going to be extinct due to us being lazy enough to not put our rubbish in the bin.

As I entered the School hall with my classroom the Husband and Wife Duo sang us in.  Mr and Mrs Minstrel were there names but that refereed to themselves as Hiwi the Kiwi . They were up on stage with their props. The had things such as pictures of different kind of fish and a guitar and a sound system. The only thing I was told before going into the hall was that a special group by the name of Hiwi the Kiwi we're here to teach us something special. As I sat down I was still in confusion as what they were going to teach us but it had something to do with fishes.

They introduced themselves and their passion for keeping their oceans clean and making sure that the rear birds and fishes were not extinct. They were a husband and wife duo that live in a caravan going around the whole of New Zealand informing others about our ocean. They have been married to each other for 40 years! We sang a lot of songs about fishes and the sea. What I learnt from them was that their is a certain measurement that we have to measure the fish we catch. There a 2 reasons why their is a certain measurement. Reason 1 it is because if the fish is too small it is not fair to the fish we have to give it a chance to grow and also because the more tastier fish are the ones that are not to big and are not too small. Reason 2 in that if the fish is too big and is over the measurement it might have babies and if we kill it it won’t give the babies a chance to be born and to make more babies of their species which may lead to having no more fish.

What I also learnt was when we catch fish and it is too small or too big we are not to chuck it back into the sea roughly. We are to use a wet towel to pick it up and gently place it back in the ocean. The reason behind using a wet towel is that we don’t peel off their scales. There scales are important to them as skin is important to us. If we peel of their scales while they are alive and then chuck them back into the ocean it might cause them to die and they won’t grow well. Here is one of the songs I learnt during Hiwi the Kiwi. Also Kaimoana means Seafood in Maori!

Kaimoana fish for the sea.
Kaimoana to feed the family.
Fish for the future and their will always be

Kaimoana for you and me!
